Electrum Fixes a Dangerous Wallet Bug
A vulnerability in the Electrum Bitcoin wallet allowed malicious servers to replace pending transactions with fraudulent ones. The risk arose when users tried to speed up a payment through Replace-by-Fee: instead of increasing the fee on the legitimate transaction, they could unknowingly sign a new transaction sending funds to an attacker. Developers confirmed at least one case involving stolen bitcoin.
The fix was included in Electrum 4.8.3, released on October 24, 2026. Users are advised to update their wallets and carefully verify the recipient address and payment amount before signing. Extra caution is necessary when a transfer remains unconfirmed and prompts the user to increase its fee.
For exchange users, the incident is a reminder that security depends on wallet software as well as the exchange service itself. Xbit.money helps users monitor BTC rates and compare exchange options. Before sending funds, verify the destination address and make sure your wallet is up to date.
